Favourite Spots in Ottawa

We love this city and all it has to offer. We try to get out as much as possible to explore new venues and frequent our old favourite spots. As we discover things around the city, we’ll share our experiences with you. Hopefully you’ll get the chance to visit somewhere new based on one of our recommendations!

Saunders Country Critters & Garden Centre (Carla)

A great little get away for the whole family! Not far outside of Ottawa the town of Oxford Mills has a fabulous little zoo that will wow both young and old! If you want to take a day trip without having to drive too far then this is the perfect place for you. The whole family can watch a red kangaroo hop, or a yak graze, or a fox trot, or a llama spit or you can even see multiple lemurs straight from Madagascar strut their stuff! Saunders County Critters has a little bit of everything to see and even feed. Check them out at www.saunderscountry.com it is worth the trip! The experience for my family was a fabulous one and we can’t wait to do it again!

Yoga Class at Mooney’s Bay (Laura)

It really is amazing how many cool things can be going on in the city that you don’t get a chance to hear about until it’s too late. Luckily, Facebook has warned me a few times this summer of up and coming events that just couldn’t be missed! One of those highlights was a midnight yoga class on Mooney’s Bay. Lululemon, being one of my favourite places to burn through my savings, hosted the event and advertised on their Fan Page. Yoga under the full moon and star-filled sky at 11pm on the beach. It was a moving and wonderful hour I shared with 420 other yogis that won’t soon be forgotten. A little gem in what was an incredible summer!

Black Dog Bistro (Carla)

Black Dog Bistro is a little town eatery with a new, fabulous patio and a completely renovated interior that offers a big array of menu choices. Located in the heart of Manotick, right along the main street, this little Bistro has a genuine, welcoming feel about it. Little town restaurants are sometimes over looked when deciding where to go out and dine but this Bistro is a must try! I hit the patio on a beautiful Friday evening and was able to enjoy the scenery and buzz all around me while enjoying some very tasty food. I am looking forward to my next experience at Black Dog and trying out the dining on the newly, re-done inside!

8 Locks’ Flat (Laura)

The NCC decided to try something new this year, and I must say, I am really impressed with the initiative. Those who know me, know I have a love for all types of watercraft – boats big and small, man powered or gas powered, including my new passion – stand up paddle boarding. From my experience visiting Ottawa by boat, the waterfront here is drastically under-used. We seem to know how to maximize the canal’s use in the winter, with the rink, expensive new rest stations and the ever-delicious Beavertails, but for some reason once the ice melts, so does the imagination of the people responsible for our gorgeous waterway. But there is now a small hint of hope that they might be on to something finally when you visit the new 8 Locks’ Flat. This licensed patio/food truck is located on the north side of the Somerset pedestrian bridge right alongside the Rideau Canal. I have been admiring it all summer and we finally had the chance to go there for a team lunch in late August. Local food and beer, an incredible view and a gorgeous summer afternoon. It was the perfect combination. Skate or cycle down the canal-side path, park your boat upstream along the dock, or park on Somerset and walk over the bridge – this place is worth a stop. It will only be open until October though, so don’t wait too long.
